Dego: Walking Trails, Culture and the Landscape of Sella

A visitor route from the Puente Romano de Cangas de Onís follows the Sella River towards Soto de Dego and Dego. In Parres, there are active tourism activities on the Sella, including river descents, as well as opportunities for leisure activities in nature.

Nature

The riverside path to Soto de Degu is 800 metres long and runs along the Sella beneath dense riverside vegetation. From Soto de Degu, a route follows the Sella for two kilometres along a broad agricultural track to Avalle. From Avalle, the riverside route continues along a path running parallel to the Sella towards Santianes de Tornín.

Walking

The 9 km, easy circular route Dego–Aballe–Collado de Andrín–Aballe–Dego begins in Dego, passes through the neighbouring village of Aballe and climbs along a partly sunny, partly shaded path to Collado de Andrín; it was walked on 29 July 2018.

A walking route from Dego to Cangas de Onís passes through the Iglesia de San Pedro, Morterolo, Llanu el Cura and the Capilla de San Antonio. An extension of the riverside trail from Cangas de Onís leads via the Puentón to Parres and then along a small path beside the river to Soto de Degu.

Another walking route from Dego to Cangas de Onís passes through the Iglesia de San Pedro, the Olla de San Vicente, the Puente Dobra and the Iglesia de Santa María; the route markers are at 1.0 km, 7.9 km, 10.2 km and 17.5 km. The different distances, trail surfaces and route profiles allow you to compare short sections, circular routes and longer walks separately.

Culture

By order of the diocese, Dego, Avalle, Collau l'Andrín and Santianes de Tornín formed the parish of San Pedro de Dego in the archpriesthood of Parres in 1886.

A route along the Sella through Soto de Dego, Dego, Avalle and Santianes de Tornín passes rural buildings and a recently restored church in the vernacular style.

Avalle and Dego in Parres celebrate the Fiestas de la Reina de los Ángeles. The celebration of the Reina de los Ángeles begins in San Pedro de Degu with a Mass, followed by a procession carrying the image of the Reina de los Ángeles.

Rural character

Dego is located in an area traditionally devoted to growing fabas. The El Jabar de Degu accommodation in Dego offers panoramic views of the Sella River valley and the Picos de Europa.
