Culture and History
In Soto Rei stands the Castillo de Soto, known as Castillo de Doña Urraca. It is the oldest building in the municipality of Ribera de Arriba and also a medieval castle preserved as a ruin. The surviving structure includes the north wall, several windows with straight lintels framed in limestone, a small round-arched window and a door with a round arch made of hewn voussoirs.
Another historic structure is the stone bridge in Soto Ribera over the Río Caudal. It was built in 1808 and restored in 1864. Its four arches are reinforced by large piers, which visibly structure the bridge's construction.
The architectural ensemble known as “La Quinta de Soto Ribera” was built at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century by an Indiano who had returned from Cuba. In its basement, La Quinta de Soto Ribera preserves a rustic kitchen with a bread oven and a cider press. In this way, the ensemble connects its architectural history with preserved elements of the former household.
The history of the area also includes the Soto del Rey station of the Norte railway. It is an element of Soto del Rey's industrial heritage and complements the historical evidence with a connection to the railway.
