Mountain Landscape
The Riospaso–La Cruz–Peña Cornechana route offers views towards Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park and Peña Ubiña. Along the same route, views open up over the Huerna Valley and the mountain range with La Tesa, La Mesa and La Almagrera.
Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park includes areas in Lena and was declared a biosphere reserve in 2012. The protected area includes the Valle del Meicín at the foot of Ubiña in Lena, as well as the Vía de la Carisa, one of the routes within the protected area.
The route to Peña Ubiña is a classic high-mountain tour in Asturias and reaches the 2,417 m summit, the highest in the Las Ubiñas massif. At the Refugio de El Meicín, at an altitude of approximately 1,500 m, it is possible to go for walks, climb, take nature photographs and have a meal.
Paths
The Molinos de Xomezana circular route is a very easy, 2.53 km-long path through the forest. It runs along a river and passes the remains of historic watermills.
The circular route also leads to the community-managed Museo Etnográfico “La Panerona”. Traditional customs and vernacular Asturian architecture are presented there.
A route to La Portiecha begins in La Cruz and initially follows a concrete track towards Mortera de la Cruz. Alternatively, a path runs eastwards from La Cruz across the meadows of Chamera and turns north at Mortera onto an old paved path that climbs to another track.
The paths represent different ways of getting around: forests, meadows, riverbanks, surfaced tracks and historic path surfaces can be compared just as short walks can be compared with high-alpine excursions.
Culture
La Mortera de La Cruz comprises a group of agricultural buildings, some with huts, located in an old mortera. Today, this area is used as meadows enclosed by hedges or fences.
Several examples of traditional rural architecture have been preserved in La Cruz. Historically, the village was also a stopping place on the Camín Francés de Santiago de Compostela.
Other places: El Bravo, Soto de Ribera, Felgueras, Grandiella, Moreda, Armada, Santa Cruz de Mieres
The Vía de la Carisa can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike; its route is signposted and officially approved as the GR 100 Vía de la Plata/Vía Carisa long-distance trail.
