Conforcos between Mountain Landscape and Cultural Heritage

Conforcos lies on the slopes of the Sierra de Conforcos. The village is home to a parish church dedicated to Saint Michael, dating from 1600, and a small sanctuary containing 26 relics discovered in 1887.

Culture and History

The church has a polychrome Baroque altarpiece with carved depictions of Saint Michael (San Miguel Arcángel), Saint Anthony (San Antonio) and Saint Lawrence (San Lorenzo), dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The church also houses a polychrome carved figure of the crucified Christ from the 17th century. The necropolis of Conforcos is recorded in the Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of Asturias under the designation IPCA-YA-02-002 for Aller, Conforcos.

Together with L’Acebal and La Infiesta, Conforcos belonged to small seasonal settlements associated with hay meadows, which served as Braña for the periods around the equinoxes and even during winter. There, livestock herders sheltered their animals in spring, autumn and during the winters with little snow.

The main festival in honour of Cristo de la Salud is held on the third Sunday in September.

Water and Routes

The old public Fuente de Conforcos spring is located in the upper part of Conforcos. It has a livestock trough whose overflow runs to a washhouse about 2 m lower down.

Access to the Fuente de Conforcos runs from the N-630 at Ujo via the AS-112 to Collanzo, then through the Río Aller valley and, at Carpielnzo, via the turn-off to Conforcos.

The Felechosa variant of the Montaña Central cycle route passes through Conforcos and then continues on asphalt to Collanzo.

Route C3, announced in 2006, connects Conforcos with the Braña Melordaña and forms part of the route from Pendones to Orlé.

Nature and Mountain Landscape

The route from Conforcos to the Braña del Cordal is approximately 6 km long one way and has an elevation gain of around 600 m. It leads through a beech forest, from where Conforcos and Collanzo can be seen.

The Braña del Cordal is an ethnographic complex in Conforcos. Its classification adds another cultural aspect of the landscape to the route through the beech forest.

In the wider region around Conforcos, Coto Bello lies between the Sierra de Conforcos and the mountain ridge of Murias and Santibanes; from there, views extend over the Cantabrian Mountains and the Aller valley.
