Discover Cabañaquinta: Churches, Markets and the GR-208

The sixth stage of the GR-208 Anillo Ciclista de la Montaña Central begins in Cabañaquinta and leads via Serrapio, Uriés, La Carbona, Collada de Caballos and Pico Tres Concejos to La Col.ladiella. The route therefore connects several named places and terrain features in a clearly described sequence.

It is 16.7 kilometres long and is listed as taking three hours. The fifth stage of the GR-208 Anillo Ciclista de la Montaña Central ends in Cabañaquinta. The two stage descriptions thus position the town along the long-distance cycle route once as a destination and once as a starting point.

Nature and Activities

Near Cabañaquinta is the Coto Bello viewpoint, at an altitude of 1,198 metres. It has a large car park as well as opportunities for hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding area. The altitude, car park and the activity options mentioned are distinct features of this viewpoint.

Culture

The Centro Cultural de Cabañaquinta has an exhibition room. A huge bagpipe sculpture called “la gaitona de Aller” stands in Plaza de la Vacaína in Cabañaquinta. Both places and objects are part of Cabañaquinta’s townscape and provide different cultural highlights.

The church in Cabañaquinta houses a crucifix sculpture from the second half of the 16th century. The new church in Cabañaquinta was completed on 28 August 1902 and was built in the Neo-Romanesque style. The Romanesque 12th-century church of San Vicente de Serrapio is also located near Cabañaquinta. It preserves a Roman votive altar dedicated to Jupiter, as well as frescoes and notable capitals.

Events

A weekly market takes place in Cabañaquinta on Wednesdays. The Feria de Artesanía de Cabañaquinta takes place in mid-June and brings together craftspeople from various fields, such as leather, glass, ceramics and wood. The weekly market is therefore tied to a particular day of the week, while the craft fair refers to a period in June.

The El Mercaón livestock fair takes place in Cabañaquinta every year on 26 November. At the El Mercaón livestock market, visitors can buy agricultural food products as well as equipment for livestock farming and fieldwork. The AS-252 connects Cabañaquinta with Laviana via La Collaona. Local roads lead from Cabañaquinta towards Santibanes de la Fuente, Pel.luno, Serrapio and Uriés.
