Discover Llerices: Nature Trails and Cultural Heritage
On Stage 7 of the GR-105 from Cangas de Onís to Covadonga, Llerices lies below the route and within view. A small hiking trail begins in Llerices and climbs steadily to Cruz de Priena, offering views of the Basilica of Covadonga.
Nature
The Muñigo–Covadonga nature trail begins shortly before the “Las Llerices” car park on the AS-262 road. It first climbs through a hillside covered with broom and gorse, then continues across level ground before entering a forest of chestnut trees, birches and field maples. It is designed to take up to one hour of effective walking time. The sequence of ascent, level ground and forest, together with the time indication, helps you consider different trail characteristics and the available time frame separately, rather than grouping both routes under a single activity category. When planning your day, two types of route can be compared side by side according to their time frame, form of movement and landscape theme.
With regard to grazing rights for the mountain pastures of the Picos de Europa, Llerices is grouped together with the mountain pastures of Orandi, Las Mestas and Fana.
Culture
The village features various examples of traditional architecture, including a hórreo with a small carving in the Villaviciosa style. The Chapel of San Antonio dates from before 1703 and has a single-nave interior. Its wooden roof has three roof planes and covers the small portico; a turned wooden grille has been preserved at the original entrance.
The traditional music archive documents a “Ramu a San Antonio” originating from Llerices, which is performed on 13 June, the feast day of Saint Anthony. Architecture, musical tradition and cultural heritage can be considered as distinct cultural perspectives when exploring Llerices.
Cueva de Parda is listed in Asturias’s cultural heritage inventory under Cangas de Onís and the locality of El Colladín. It is located in a rural area that is difficult to access; accompaniment by a local specialist with knowledge of the area is recommended for a visit.
