Inguanzo – Cave Art, Baroque Architecture and Hillside Paths

In Inguanzo, the Cueva de El Bosque is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest. The cave contains three panels of Palaeolithic wall art, dated to the Middle Magdalenian: the panels of the signs, the aurochs and the goats. Because of its Palaeolithic rock art, the Cueva de El Bosque is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When viewing this cultural heritage, its protection status, subject matter, chronological classification and international recognition can be considered separately. On 17 January, Inguanzo celebrates the feast of San Antón, also known as San Antonio Abad.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa Cruz de Inguanzo is a rural Baroque church dating from 1780. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the complex comprises a single nave and an open transept. The church is in good condition.

The Palacio del Mayorazgo de Inguanzo and its protected surroundings were classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1994. The Palacio is a stately building from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, belonging chronologically to the Baroque period while also being clearly shaped by Renaissance forms. Its compact rectangular structure comprises two storeys and has no inner courtyard.

Another example of built heritage is the Casona de La Corralada. It is listed in Asturias’s heritage inventory under inventory code IPCA-EI-08-25. As a 17th-century manor-house palace, it has a square floor plan and a cubic structure. Its exterior features include a hipped roof and an adjoining hórreo. The side façade has a large Baroque coat of arms and, below it, a shell-shaped loophole.

Paths and Landscape

The Ruta de los Artistas de la Covaciella follows an old path through the forest to Inguanzo after crossing the bridge that connects Berodia and Inguanzo with the main road of the municipal district. On the way to Inguanzo, the route then follows an almost horizontal path along the hillside and offers views of the Sierra del Cuera.

The forest path, bridge crossing and hillside path describe different features of the same route. When planning, you can consider these elements separately and mentally distinguish the cultural visit to the place from the landscape along the connecting route.
