Buelna: Natural Beach, Coast and Holiday Apartments

Playa de Buelna is a natural beach formed by a group of karst depressions. Its irregular, channel-like shape extends over approximately 50 metres and expands to 1,000 metres at low tide. It can be reached via an agricultural track that begins in Buelna. The shape of the beach thus combines a geological formation with a distinct change caused by the tidal level. A footpath to the Cobijeru Complex begins east of the rural centre of Buelna.

Nature

The Cobijeru Complex comprises an inland beach, a former area shaped by erosion with blowholes, caves and a natural bridge. It has been designated a natural monument. Several different landscape forms meet in this area: the inland beach lies within the former area shaped by erosion, while the caves, blowholes and natural bridge form further components of the complex.

The Bufones de Santiuste form at the edge of limestone cliffs through small cracks or fractures in the rock and consist of a chamber or cave and a vertical shaft. Their formation is therefore directly connected to the structure of the limestone. During heavy seas, they can eject jets of water reaching several dozen metres in height. Buelna’s natural landscape is therefore characterised by both the Playa shaped by karst depressions and the erosion-shaped formations of Cobijeru, as well as the blowholes associated with the limestone cliffs.

Paths

The Acantilados de Buelna are located along the Senda Costera. They include the remains of an old tidal mill. The path’s starting point, the coastal location and the historic structure are each connected to a separate local feature: the path begins east of the town centre, the cliffs are located along the Senda Costera, and the mill remains belong to the Acantilados de Buelna.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa Marina de Buelna is a historicist church in the neo-Gothic style. It is listed in the inventory of Asturias’s architectural heritage.
