Discover Camuño: Ruta de Indianos and Historic Architecture

Camuño combines a historic route with distinctive buildings and several clearly distinguishable stops. The Ruta de Indianos runs through Salas, Villamar, Camuño, Priero, Mallecina, La Arquera, Malleza, La Granja, La Barraca, and Gallinero.

Route and Architecture

From Salas, the Ruta de Indianos follows a regional road towards Pravia via Villamar to Camuño. Along this route, visitors encounter villages with buildings constructed by emigrants after their return from America. The route thus links several place names and the architecture found in each location into a historical sequence.

Those who do not want to view historic architecture solely through the lens of a particular architectural style will find several points of reference here: The route combines changes of place with buildings, while the individual stops can be understood through their period of origin, architectural classification, and different components.

At the entrance to Camuño, along the Ruta de Indianos, there is an Indiano house surrounded by an iron fence. This stop can therefore be classified both within the route and within the local architectural heritage.

Casa El Americano

Casa El Americano is an eclectic house from the late 19th century at the entrance to Camuño, in the district of Fenigonte. The property is enclosed by a masonry wall and an iron fence.

The house follows the Indiano architectural model associated with bourgeois residences in Asturias. Its eclectic character, period of origin, property enclosure, and architectural model can therefore be considered as distinct features.

El Caleyo

The Casona de El Caleyo is located one kilometre from the church of Camuño. The Casona con Capilla de S. Lorenzo in El Caleyo dates from the 17th to the 19th century and is classified as vernacular Baroque.

The complex of the Casona con Capilla de S. Lorenzo includes a dovecote and a chapel dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The time period, architectural style, and individual components of the complex thus provide various points of reference for the historical classification of this site.

Church of Camuño

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé de Camuño has Romanesque origins and was later altered in the 18th century through renovations and additions. Its architectural history thus combines Romanesque origins with later changes in the 18th century.

The church is located in Fenigonte, a settlement in the municipality belonging to the parish of Camuño, on the edge of the AS-225 road.
