Culture and History

The Casa de la Apicultura presents an exhibition showing the development of beekeeping techniques used in the region over the past century. Its collection includes around one hundred old and modern beekeeping objects. The Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía del Hierro documents the history and marketing of iron craftsmanship in the municipality of Boal, which developed particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Castro de Pendia and its protected surroundings have been recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 2014. The settlement was founded during the Iron Age between the 4th and 1st centuries BC and remained inhabited under Roman rule until the 1st century AD.

The Ruta de Los Castros PR.AS-249 leads from the Casa de la Apicultura to the Castro de Pendia and the tumuli of Penácaros, before returning to the Casa de la Apicultura. Access to the Castro de Pendia is signposted from the AS-12 at Pendia at kilometre point 19; from there, 2 kilometres follow a local road and 1 kilometre follows an unpaved path.

The Cova del Demo in Monte Llanteirou, in the municipalities of Boal and Illano, is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Inside, there are schematic depictions of animals and people, dated to the second half of the Bronze Age, between approximately 1500 and 1100 BC. From Froseira, a steep, well-signposted footpath of approximately 2,000 metres leads to the Cova del Demo. The interior is locked and can only be visited with special permission from the Ministry of Culture of the Principality of Asturias.

Trails and Water

The Paseo Indiano or Ruta Real through Boal covers a total of 5.10 kilometres: 0.50 kilometres on foot along the Kings’ Path and 4.60 kilometres of the remaining section by vehicle. The circular Ruta de Penouta begins in the centre of Boal/Bual opposite the church and is approximately 23 kilometres long. The Ruta molíos, cortíos y calieiros runs mostly through native woodland and has an ethnographic focus.

The dam of Embalse de Doiras is located in the municipality of Boal, while the reservoir extends into the municipality of Illano and forms part of the characteristic landscape of western Asturias. Boating, swimming and fishing are possible in Embalse de Doiras; boat moorings are available at Puente del Estado and next to the dam.
