Muñas: Astronomy, Landscape and Culture
Muñas combines a distinctive landscape with astronomical, historical and architectural themes. The Observatorio Astronómico de Muñás offers the opportunity to learn about astronomy. The Ruta del Interior is also known as the Camino Real de Concilleiro and runs through Muñás. This brings together an astronomical connection, a named route and various examples of architectural and craft history in one place.
The route begins in the municipality of Valdés at Venta de Cruces and then continues to Muñás. Its course through the village completes the connection between the starting point, the continuation of the route and the section within Muñás. The AS-222 also leads towards Muñás, providing another named reference to the village.
Landscape and Route
Muñas features a varied landscape with foothill areas and individual agricultural plots. Wooded areas separate these sections from one another. Open agricultural land, wooded sections and foothill areas thus stand side by side, without reducing the landscape to just one form.
The route of the Ruta del Interior, or Camino Real de Concilleiro, and the direction of the AS-222 add two specific spatial references to this landscape. Venta de Cruces marks the starting point in the municipality of Valdés, while Muñás appears as another section of the route and as the direction in which the road leads.
Culture in Muñás de Arriba
In Muñás de Arriba, La Torre de Arriba is one of the two houses classified as so-called Indian architecture. La Torre de Arriba was built in 1912 by Arturo Peláez de Villademoros. Its name, architectural classification, specific year of construction and builder’s name together represent the house’s documented history.
Another cultural landmark is the church area of San Juan. It is considered one of the best-designed areas in the municipality. The Church of San Juan in Muñás de Arriba dates from the 19th century. The church area is situated above the road and is supported by retaining walls.
Iron slag has also been found at several locations in Muñás de Arriba. Furnaces and forges are also mentioned for the area near the Camino de Lavayos and the Barrio de Oturiello. Alongside the house and the church area, specific traces of ironworking are therefore also among the documented features of Muñás de Arriba.
