Fuentes de Rubielos – Trails, Nature and Culture

Fuentes de Rubielos combines a distinctive townscape with historic religious buildings and landscapes of woodland and limestone. Traditional houses line narrow streets and give the town a clear architectural character. Around the municipality, pine forests as well as mixed forests of junipers, oaks and holm oaks extend across the landscape.

Culture

A cultural feature of particular note is Birlos de Fuentes de Rubielos, which is included in the declaration of Aragon's traditional bowling variants as intangible cultural heritage. The Iglesia de la Asunción is a Baroque church from the 17th century. The Ermita de Santa María Magdalena was built in the 16th century and restored in 1975; it is late Gothic and preserves an interesting 16th-century altarpiece in the form of a triptych.

The Fuente de la Iglesia also brings together different periods: reused Gothic architectural elements decorate its front, including the keystone of a ribbed vault. Other parts of the fountain may have come from a medieval church that was demolished in the 17th century. At Santa Isabel, a 12th-century cistern is among the Islamic remains. Near the Ermita de Santa Isabel there is also a small Iberian-Roman archaeological site, indicating human settlement for approximately 3,000 years.

The pilgrimage associated with the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena takes place on the Saturday closest to 22 July. During this pilgrimage, the clavarios distribute pastries and traditional molletes to the pilgrims.

Nature

A distinctive landscape feature is the Peñas de Santa María, Cretaceous limestone cliffs of considerable geological interest. The Fuentes de Rubielos–Olba route leads to this formation. As a natural viewpoint, the Peñas de Santa María offer views of the Río Rubielos and the Masía de Peñablanca.

Another perspective is offered by the Punto Geodésico on the Ruta Vértice Geodésico, with its panoramic view of the surroundings of Fuentes de Rubielos. This route runs through the municipal areas of Rubielos de Mora and Fuentes de Rubielos. On the banks of the Río El Morrón, there is a bathing area in summer.

Trails

The Santa Isabel desde Fuentes walking route begins at the junction at the town entrance on the A-232, where signposts mark the start of the route. It is 4.3 kilometres long one way and leads from the entrance to Fuentes de Rubielos to the Ermita de Santa Isabel at an altitude of 1,200 metres. The route follows the PRTE-21 hiking trail and runs along a section of the Camino del Cid.

The Ermita de Santa Isabel was built around the 16th or 17th century. The Ermita de Santa María Magdalena can be reached via the A-232 and then along a path of approximately 800 metres that passes by the Masico. The different route lengths, markings and starting points help you compare the trails objectively in advance.

In summer, the Santa Isabel desde Fuentes walking route offers little shade; hikers should therefore bring enough water. Specimens of the Spanish ibex can be found in the area along the route to the Ermita de Santa Isabel.
