Brea de Aragón: Mudéjar Culture, Shoemaking and Trails

The Museo del Calzado presents the culture, history and traditions of Brea de Aragón and the Comarca del Aranda through shoemaking and the footwear industry. It is housed in a purpose-built two-storey building covering 600 square metres. The exhibition includes audiovisual and multimedia systems, interactive areas, machines, virtual images and machines that are activated by the presence of visitors; the visit lasts almost one hour.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa Ana received barrel vaults with lunettes in 1676 and 1677. The work was entrusted to the architect Juan de Marca; the vaults were decorated with stucco work in the Mudéjar tradition and latticework.

The Mudéjar remains in the Iglesia de Santa Ana were designated a listed cultural asset of Aragonese heritage by an order dated 5 December 2002 and published on 8 January 2003. They are registered as a listed cultural asset of Aragonese heritage.

The Expo Calzado is also part of the town's public profile: the Brea de Aragón footwear and trade fair is held annually, and the 2024 event was its eighth edition.

Annual Festivals

On 3 February, Brea de Aragón celebrates the feast of San Blas with a procession to the hermitage. Santa Ana is celebrated on 26 July. The main festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario last one week and begin on the first Sunday in October.

Nature and Trails

The Fuente del Gollizno is a river gorge through which the Río Aranda flows. The walking route from Brea de Aragón to the Fuente del Gollizno is approximately 3.5 kilometres long, takes about 45 minutes and is suitable for all age groups. At the Fuente del Gollizno, there is a picnic area and a shelter.

The PR-Z 16 between Mesones de Isuela and Brea de Aragón is listed as a 14.076-kilometre traverse with a stated duration of 4 hours and 25 minutes. The trail begins at the Brea de Aragón education centre, leads to the Collado de Valdepozos and then descends through orchards towards Mesones de Isuela.

The PR-Z 74 leads from Brea de Aragón to Pico La Lezna. The round trip covers a total of 6.814 kilometres, with the one-way distance being 3.407 kilometres, plus 365 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 2 hours and 40 minutes.
