Culture and Festivals

In Puebla de Alfindén, the Canto de la Aurora is an oral tradition passed down from parents to children which, according to eyewitness accounts, is at least two centuries old. Since 1982, the Canto de la Aurora has been sung four times a year at dawn by a group of mixed voices.

Its route begins at Plaza de España and leads through the streets of the old town; stops are marked by ceramic tiles bearing a rose and the fifth verse of the respective stanza. The celebration of the Virgen de Alfindén on 25 March includes a mass sung by the Coral Municipal in the hermitage.

The patron saint festivals of La Puebla de Alfindén take place from 14 to 19 August in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption and San Roque, and include children's activities, bullfighting events, dance evenings, competitions and liturgical celebrations. On Maundy Thursday during Alfindén's Holy Week, the programme begins with the celebration of the Lord's Supper followed by the Hora Santa and ends in Plaza de España with the popular Rompida de la Hora; the local group Grupo de Tambores y Bombos de La Puebla is scheduled to perform it.

The Thursday that marks the beginning of Carnival falls between 29 January and 4 March, depending on the year; the focus of this celebration is longaniza.

History and Heritage

The first documented mention of Puebla de Alfindén Castle appears in a document dated March 1169: in it, Pedro de Urrea sells a property in Alfindén to Miguel Sanz and Toda.

The remains of the castle are located a few kilometres from the town, next to a shooting range on an elongated rocky outcrop. The castle is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

Cycle Connections

A separate 2-kilometre cycle path connects La Puebla de Alfindén with Pastriz. An 8-kilometre cycle connection in total links La Puebla de Alfindén to Zaragoza's cycle network via the Malpica industrial estate and the cycle paths in the Santa Isabel district.

This connection includes a bidirectional cycle path with an average width of 3 metres, separated from road traffic. The figures of two and a total of eight kilometres provide two clear points of comparison for your own planning.
