Mesones de Isuela – Los Luna Castle and Mudéjar Culture

Culture and History

The chapel of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles is located inside Los Luna Castle. Its roof structure is considered one of the outstanding examples of Aragonese Mudéjar roof structures. The parish church of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has a square tower with an octagonal upper section and diamond-pattern decoration. Its Mudéjar tower was classified in 2002 as a Catalogued Asset of Aragonese Cultural Heritage. The parish church has Mudéjar origins; its original construction dates from the 16th century.

The Ermita de San Roque was built at the end of the 17th century and preserves geometric decorations in the Mudéjar tradition as well as a Baroque altarpiece. The Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer is located in the centre of Mesones de Isuela and was built in the 17th century. The protection status, construction period and architectural design offer different perspectives on the buildings mentioned.

The historic centre of Mesones de Isuela follows a medieval layout on the steep slopes of the rocky massif on which the walled Los Luna Castle stands. The tourist information office is located on C. Castillo in Mesones de Isuela; guided tours are also available.

The PR-Z 16 route from Mesones de Isuela to Cueva del Moreno begins at the ascent to the castle and runs along paths and tracks towards the Barranco de Andacón before following the stream. The PR-Z 16 route from Brea de Aragón reaches Mesones de Isuela after descending through orchards and crossing the GR 90.

Local Events

The Fiesta del Mondongo takes place annually in Mesones de Isuela on 8 December; it is organised by the Mesolunaque cultural association. On 16 August, the residents of Mesones de Isuela make a pilgrimage to the hermitage and carry the image of San Roque in a procession.

Mesones de Isuela is part of Route 3, “Los Mudéjares Mestizo y Fronterizo”, of the regional Territorio-Mudéjar route, together with Saviñán, La Almunia de Doña Godina and Alpartir.
