Nature

The Cascadas del Huéznar are the main attraction. Waterfalls and pools form there when the river flows over limestone formations made of travertine. In San Nicolás del Puerto, the Cascadas consist of two waterfalls surrounded by a riverside forest of elms, willows, ash trees and alders. They were declared a natural monument in 2001. The Cascadas del Huéznar are currently temporarily closed.

Another water feature is the Nacimiento de la Rivera del Huéznar, located in the town centre. Water emerges from this natural spring in spurts, bubbling up from the ground; a recreational area is located next to it. It is equipped with bridges, wooden walkways and tables. The Galindón River also shapes the town: the Puente Romano de San Nicolás del Puerto spans the river, whose water forms a river beach within the town centre. The artificial beach beside the Puente Romano is created by damming the water with the sluice gates next to the bridge.

A different landscape can be found at Cerro del Hierro in San Nicolás del Puerto. This karst landscape, shaped by erosion, features hollowed-out rocks, tunnels and attractive vegetation. Rappelling, climbing and caving are possible at Cerro del Hierro. The Sendero Cerro del Hierro also leads into galleries and tunnels carved into the rock formations.

Trails and Activities

The official circular route to the Cascadas del Huéznar starts at the car park next to the El Martinete restaurant and ends there again. It is 776 metres long, takes 30 minutes and has a medium level of difficulty. Swimming is prohibited at the Cascadas; the Playa de San Nicolás upstream is the only authorised place for this.

The Solana del Calvario Trail is linear, has an easy difficulty level and covers 1.7 kilometres. The estimated duration is 30 minutes. It connects the Nacimiento del Huéznar recreational area with the artificial beach of San Nicolás del Puerto next to the Puente Romano. The Las Dehesas Trail starts at the place locally known as La Playa, next to the junction with the road to the railway station, and leads through an extensive area of dehesa landscapes.

El Rebollar is a circular route that goes around the Cerro del Hierro natural monument. After following the Vereda del Mojón Blanco, it reconnects with the Vía Verde de la Sierra in San Nicolás del Puerto. The El Rebollar Trail is 8.109 kilometres long, takes approximately two hours and has a medium level of difficulty.

The Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla follows a former mining railway line approximately 15 kilometres long. It runs from the Los Prados junction to the Cerro del Hierro mining area, which has been declared a natural monument of Andalusia. The nearest stop for the intercity bus to this Vía Verde is located in San Nicolás del Puerto; public transport with accessible vehicles is available.

The Geo-Ruta San Nicolás begins on the road opposite the Playa de San Nicolás, where the information board marking the start is located. The historic building was converted into the Punto de Información Cerro del Hierro.

Culture

The historic buildings include the Ermita de San Diego, a chapel built in the 15th century in the vernacular Mudéjar style. It has a wooden ceiling and a 20th-century depiction of San Diego by Castillo Lastrucci. The Iglesia de San Sebastián is a single-nave Mudéjar building from the 15th century. Its surviving or rediscovered details include the remains of a Corinthian column and a rediscovered baptismal font.

The Crucero de Piedra was created between 1575 and 1599. The stone cross stands on a column of the Corinthian order and points to the Ruta de la Plata. The Romería de San Diego takes place every year on the second Sunday in May.

Since 2003, the Noche del Terror has been organised in San Nicolás del Puerto as a playful, tourist and cultural event. It uses a route approximately one kilometre long through the forests around San Nicolás del Puerto, which receives a different thematic design every year.
