Gaucín: Castillo del Águila, Culture and Hiking Routes

Landscape and Nature

Castillo del Águila stands at the highest point of Gaucín and overlooks the Genal Valley, the Campo de Gibraltar and North Africa.

The diverse habitats around Gaucín and the village’s location on the migratory route between Africa and Europe are considered good conditions for birdwatching. The cultural landscape of Gaucín is listed in the Register of Cultural Landscapes of Andalusia.

Culture and History

Castillo del Águila has Roman origins and was reinforced by Muslims during the Andalusian period. The surviving parts include the wall, the keep, the cisterns and an escape tunnel.

The former Carmelite monastery is a representative building for the village and is now used as a cultural centre. Integrated into Gaucín’s urban structure is the Iglesia de San Sebastián, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century.

The Fuente de los Seis Caños is located at a small widening of the village square and was built from sandstone in 1628.

The historical traces are therefore spread across different places and periods: the Castillo combines Roman origins with the Andalusian period, while the church, former monastery and fountain form further parts of the village’s historic urban structure.

Hiking and Mountain Activities

The GR 141 Gran Sendero de la Serranía de Ronda passes through Gaucín on stage 3, “El Colmenar to Benarrabá”. Marked hiking routes ranging from 3 to 19 kilometres start from the village; downloadable guides are available in English and Spanish. The range of route lengths allows visitors to compare different hiking days.

Mountain activities also include the Via Ferrata Sierra del Hacho in Gaucín, which is part of the Serranía de Ronda Via Ferrata Park.

The nature and mountain activities focus on different aspects: viewpoints and birdwatching are complemented by the long-distance trail, marked routes and the via ferrata. This makes it possible to consider the landscape impressions, different route lengths and a separate mountain activity as distinct themes.

Art and Events

The Centro Cultural «El Convento» organises concerts, exhibitions, conferences and workshops throughout the year. During Art Gaucín, the studios of local artists open to visitors every year on two weekends in May.

The Museo Etnográfico displays objects and tools that illustrate traditional rural life in Andalusia. The Espacio Sánchez Zabaleta in Gaucín houses a permanent exhibition space for the artist’s works.

Shapó Olé is a contemporary art gallery in the centre of Gaucín, bringing together painting, photography, sculpture and engraving.

The cultural offerings differ in form: the cultural centre combines several types of events, Art Gaucín brings together studio visits over two weekends in May, the museum focuses on rural life, and the exhibition space and gallery are dedicated to visual art.
