La Puerta de Segura: Holiday apartment between nature and culture

La Puerta de Segura combines impressive landscapes with traces from many centuries. A large part of the municipality lies within the Parque Natural Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas. In the built-up area, the Río Guadalimar divides the town into two parts. A riverside promenade with recreational areas and a children’s playground stretches along the river.

Nature and trails

For active days, the Vía Verde de Segura offers a 27-kilometre route with a compacted gravel surface. It runs through La Puerta de Segura and the Parque Natural Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas, through a hilly landscape characterised by olive groves and through the gallery forest along the Río Guadalimar. The route is signposted and can be used year-round. A 5-kilometre cycle path also connects Puente de Génave with La Puerta de Segura. The different route lengths provide a clear basis for comparison when planning your own day.

The Mirador y Paisaje de las Riscas is a natural viewpoint for walking and watching sunsets. The summit of Pico Oruña can be reached via a forest track that passes through olive groves, pine forests and small stands of holm oaks; panoramic views await at the top. At 1,245 metres, Alto de la Buitrera is a mountain in the outer mountain zone of the Sierra de Segura and offers wide views of the natural park.

Culture and history

Above the historic remains stands the Castillo de Bujalamé, which dates from the Almohad period and is dated to the last third of the 11th century and the first half of the 12th century. Only the remains of a former square outer tower of the defensive complex have survived; the tower was built of rammed earth.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Mateo is neoclassical. Its design is attributed to the architect Sebastián de Azcuaga and dated to approximately 1817–1820. The church was rebuilt in 1821 on the site of a medieval predecessor that had been destroyed by fire in 1811. The sacristy contains a silver processional cross from the 16th century.

The Yacimiento Arqueológico de Bujalamé is an Iberian archaeological site from the 4th century BC on a hill beside the Río Guadalimar. A later listed building is the Teatro de La Puerta de Segura, an eclectic building with an oval floor plan and a ceramic plaque bearing the year 1928. During the San Blas festival on 3 February, fires are traditionally lit on the previous evening; on that day, traditional rosquillas are distributed.
