Escóznar between the Vega de Granada and Arab history

History

The town layout and origins of Escóznar are Muslim. Escóznar’s origins date back to the Arab period; the town belonged to the territory of Íllora. The place name is said to derive from the Arabic Išquẓnar. Escóznar was also one of the earlier alquerías mentioned by Ibn al-Jaṭīb in the 14th century. The town’s layout, the history of its name, and medieval tradition thus offer three different approaches to the town’s past.

Culture

Escóznar is home to the parish of Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís-Escóznar-Obéilar. The patron saint festivities in honor of Saint Francis take place on the fourth weekend. The schools of Granada, Escóznar, and Asquerosa remained in operation until the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. In 1879, Alhama visited Escóznar for the first time; he had built a church and a school there.

Archaeology

At the El Tesorillo de Escóznar site, six settlement and usage phases were identified, ranging from prehistory to the present day. The villa complex of El Tesorillo de Escóznar comprised three buildings for the production and storage of olive oil. The Roman settlement of El Tesorillo de Escóznar belonged to the pars fructuaria, an area for processing and transforming produce within a villa of the early Imperial period from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. Olive oil use can be classified here as a distinct historical focus alongside the other settlement phases.

Events

The Villa de Escóznar race passed through prominent locations and the peri-urban area of Escóznar, reached neighboring Obéilar, and followed both streets within the town and rural roads. It was a joint project of the local neighborhood association and C.D. Kilometroypico, intended to promote sport among young people from Escóznar and the neighboring towns of Valderrubio, Obéilar, and Láchar.
