Discover Moclín: Castillo, Gorge and Historic Trails

At the Castillo de Moclín, two defensive areas stand side by side: the outer walls and an alcazaba crowned by the Torre del Homenaje.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Moclín was founded in 1501 within the walled area of the town below the Castillo de Moclín. It houses the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Paño with a 2.64 × 2.21 metre painting of Christ carrying the cross. In the town centre, a historic religious building and a painting of Christ carrying the cross stand side by side as independent cultural attractions.

The Pósito de Moclín is currently a cultural centre with ethnographic objects and activities held there. The Castillo de Moclín can be reached from the centre of Moclín via Calle Mota. The cultural attractions thus differ clearly in terms of architectural history, religious art, ethnographic collection and the activities held there.

Landscape

The Tajos de la Hoz are a sharply incised gorge formed by the Río Velillos. The Mirador de Moclín is located on the right-hand side of the N-432, shortly before the centre of Moclín in the direction of Tiena, and has a small, safe car park.

Here, two different landscape forms meet: the Tajos de la Hoz reveal the deeply incised course of the Río Velillos, while the mirador is an explicitly designated viewpoint beside the road. The gorge and viewpoint therefore represent two clearly distinct natural and landscape features.

Trails and Experiences

The circular Ruta del Gollizno PR-A84 begins in Moclín or Olivares, depending on the direction of travel. Moclín is also part of a stage of the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago. The two routes represent different forms of travelling: one is designed as a circular route, while the other forms part of a longer pilgrimage route.

Las Trincheras de Moclín are partly accessible by car; from there, a well-marked path continues on foot for 5–10 minutes. Las Trincheras de Moclín are a route where visitors can learn about the history of the most recent war and view strategically located landscapes. The combination of access road and short walk connects historical content with a specifically described sequence of paths.

The Vía Ferrata de La Solana includes stairs anchored into the rock, suspension bridges and exposed sections. Suitable safety equipment is required to use the Vía Ferrata de La Solana. The Cueva del Goyino can be reached on foot via a path leading downhill from Moclín through the Cañada de Corcuela.

The types of route thus range from the circular trail and pilgrimage stage to the historic path, via ferrata and downhill access to the cave. The destinations mentioned can therefore be distinguished by their cultural focus, landscape connection, trail character and required equipment.
