El Varadero: Ruta del Mar and Fiestas

El Varadero is the seafaring district of Motril (Granada) and developed around the historic commercial, leisure and fishing port, which is considered the only historic port of its kind on the coast of Granada. The Ruta del Mar is a 23.60-kilometre route with a low level of difficulty and 55 metres of cumulative elevation gain. It runs over asphalt, a dirt track and beach sections. Through Varadero, it passes the Lonja de pescado and the Ermita del Carmen, then continues along the traditional Camino Patria through orchards and traditional cultivated areas before ascending to Motril; the Cerro de la Virgen forms the backdrop. Culture and Tradition

In Varadero, the Fiestas in honour of Virgen del Carmen take place every year on 16 July and last almost a week. The programme includes music, fairground rides, sporting activities and traditional communal meals. The procession of Virgen del Carmen first passes through the streets of Varadero, then boards at the Lonja Pesquera and continues by sea along the coast of Motril. Each year, one of the fishing boats moored at the quay is selected to accompany Virgen del Carmen at sea during the celebrations.
