Caniles: Hiking Trails, Culture and Holiday Apartments

The municipal Los Olmos–Morax route is 12.00 kilometres long and classified as moderately difficult. The Ruta Morax begins and ends at the GR-8101, shortly before Los Olmos, and runs through the basin of the Arroyo de Moras east of the road from Caniles to Escúllar. Its length, classification and fixed starting and ending points provide a clear basis for comparing the trails in Caniles.

Nature and Trails

The Sendero del Tullio leads to the foot of the Sierra de Baza Nature Park. Along its route, it passes the Arroyo Bodurria, where there is a spring. The Sendero Guadalopón runs alongside a century-old acacia tree, which is highlighted for its size and impressive growth. This trail also includes the Puente de Hierro, over which the railway once ran.

The circular BTT route Caniles has been created for cycling. It is 63.2 kilometres long, begins at the Centro Micológico in Caniles and leads into the Sierra de Baza Nature Park. The different lengths and types of activity make the trails directly comparable.

Culture and History

Caniles has an 11.3-kilometre circular cultural and tourist trail. It begins in the town centre and provides access to historic irrigation channels, the Fuente de los Caños and several mills. The channels include Aguacía, Alcaicía, Guagüix, Manzanil and Cordobica, along with several side branches.

The present-day Church of Santa María y San Pedro stands on the site of Caniles’s former main mosque. The Torre de Caniles bears the designation of a historically significant watchtower and is also known as Albacara del Hadjí. The Torre de los Moros is 8.5 metres high and has loopholes and a masonry vault; it can be reached via the road from Baza to Caniles.

The single-nave Mudéjar hermitage Ermita de San Sebastián was built in the 18th century on the site of a former Arab cemetery. The Pósito Real de Caniles is a building from the second half of the 18th century. Its comprehensive renovation has been completed; it was subsequently intended for use as a cultural and multi-purpose building. The Pósito de Caniles preserves more than two centuries of history and is part of the municipality’s cultural heritage.

Nature and Events

The Centro de Interpretación Micológico is the venue for the Jornadas Micológicas del Altiplano Granadino. Excursions are also organised there, allowing visitors to explore the mycology of the Baza region on site. The centre presents information about the mushrooms and fungi of the surrounding region, including the popular níscalos.

The sixth Feria Agroganadera de Caniles took place on 8 and 9 November 2025. The programme included livestock exhibitions, local products, tastings, competitions and activities for families.

Traditions

On Saint Sebastian’s Day, the so-called Robo del Santo takes place in Caniles at 5 p.m. in front of the Church of Santa María y San Pedro. In the Robo del Santo, the person who receives the processional cross becomes the Hermano de San Sebastián and must organise and finance the following year’s celebrations.

Regional Trails

The Caniles–Molineras route leads to the Bodegas Vilaplana, where visitors can enjoy wine. It is connected with Las Molineras, a district of Caniles, and the heritage-listed building Fabriquilla del Oro.

Other places at the same level are Rejano, Bácor, Gorafe, Graena, Otívar, Escoznar, Cúllar Vega and Cáñar.

Geographical Location

The regional road GR-8101 runs from Caniles through the Sierra de Baza Nature Park towards Almería.
