Benamaurel – Ruta del Azufre, Cave Houses and Festivals

Benamaurel combines historic architecture, festival traditions and a landscape shaped by geology. Benamaurel has troglodytic quarters with cave houses that were hollowed out over centuries as traditional dwellings in the slopes of hills and ravines. The deposits of the Minas de azufre de Benamaurel formed through the biologically induced formation of elemental sulfur in sediments beneath a shallow lake saturated with mineral salts. In the Granada Geopark, the geological conditions of the Ruta del Azufre are designated Lugar de Interés Geológico LIG 55.

The natural-history classification adds a second, specialist perspective to the area’s historical context. Geological formation and historical use thus stand alongside each other as distinct levels, with neither having to replace the other.

The Ruta del Azufre de Benamaurel is an approximately 8-kilometre-long linear route. It begins at the Plaza Mayor, passes through the San Antonio quarter and descends to the Vega del Guardal. It continues through the badlands of Benamaurel to the El Minado area, where sulfur was extracted from shafts.
