Šentrupert can be explored through its buildings, cultural monuments and trails. The Church of St Rupert is one of the outstanding examples of Gothic architectural history from the second half of the 15th century. Inside, it preserves remains of medieval frescoes as well as Gothic-Modernist ornamentation by Koželj from 1897.

Culture

The Church of St Francis Xavier stands on Vesela Gora and was consecrated in 1735. Its octagonal central structure and diagonally rotated bell towers give the building a distinctive form. In 1760, the church was decorated with frescoes by Anton Tušek from Škofja Loka.

Šentrupert’s religious heritage also includes the Way of the Cross, built in 1730. It includes a Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, constructed in 1749 based on the model of the Holy Sepulchre in Palestine. The Church of the Holy Spirit in Viher has been documented since 1275; a semicircular Romanesque portal has been preserved there. The sanctuary and triumphal arch are decorated with frescoes dating from 1500 to 1510.

Grad Škrljevo also reaches far back into history: the complex was first mentioned in 1043. Its Romanesque core was later partly remodelled in the Gothic period and extended in the Baroque period. Thus, different construction phases and design forms stand side by side in several places without their respective characteristics merging into one another.

Things to do

The Dežela kozolcev Museum covers 2.5 hectares of landscaped grounds and has a 1 km network of walking paths. As an open-air museum, it displays 19 different hayracks. They come from the Mirna Valley, with the exception of one hayrack from the area around Ivančna Gorica. Expert-led tours and presentations focus on the historical development and construction of hayracks.

For longer walks, there is the 20 km Steklasova hiking trail. It can be walked in two sections and in both directions. The trail leads from the square in front of the Church of St Rupert to Vesela Gora at an elevation of 324 m. The Baroque Church of St Francis Xavier and the Barbova Manor are located there.

Above the village of Šentrupert, a full-moon night hike leads to Nebesa. During the Nebesa hike, local food and drinks are served above Šentrupert.

Local traditions

In the surroundings of Šentrupert, the Kurent Family Collection at the Janezkova farmstead displays agricultural equipment illustrating fieldwork at the beginning of the 20th century. Visitors can view, study and also try out the equipment exhibited by the Kurent Family Collection. Also in the surroundings of Šentrupert, the Kurent family wine cellar preserves a black kitchen.
