Dobrnič combines a historic town centre with Baroque religious heritage, the memory of the founding congress of the Slovene Anti-Fascist Women’s Association and a distinctive karst landscape. Added to this are the Baraga Hiking Trail, the Mali Trebanjski Krog cycling route and several historic sites in the surrounding area. Dobrnič therefore brings together a range of themes, extending from culture and history to hiking, cycling routes and nature observation.

Culture

The historic town centre of Dobrnič is a well-proportioned square with the Church of St George. The present church is Baroque; construction began in 1777, and it was consecrated for worship in 1785. Inside is a baptismal font at which Friderik Baraga and Alojzij Šuštar were baptised. The townscape, architectural history and memory of two personalities connected with the church thus come together in one place.

The history of the 20th century is also present in Dobrnič. On 17 and 18 October 1943, the founding congress of the Slovene Anti-Fascist Women’s Association was held here. The cultural centre houses a memorial room dedicated to the 1st Congress of the Slovene Anti-Fascist Women’s Association. It conveys to visitors the context of the wartime period in which the congress took place. Dobrnič also hosted a traditional commemorative ceremony for the 1st Congress of the Slovene Anti-Fascist Women’s Association, abbreviated as SPŽZ.

Baraga

Another historical focal point is the Baraga Homestead in Mali Vasi. It is classified as protected architectural heritage and is also the birthplace of the missionary Friderik Irenej Baraga. The memorial rooms there contain period furniture from Baraga’s life in Slovenia. In addition, there is a museum presentation of his missionary life in Canada and the United States.

Dobrnič is one of three places associated with stages of Friderik Baraga’s life along the Baraga Hiking Trail. The trail is laid out as an 18-kilometre circular route and passes through Dobrnič. Another connection is provided by the Pot Mare Rupene trail: its two branches meet in Dobrnič. From Dolenjske Toplice, this trail leads via Globodolo and Šmavro to Dobrnič; the section is approximately 22 kilometres long and takes around seven hours at a moderate walking pace. From Žužemberk, another 12-kilometre section leads via Lisec to Dobrnič and takes around four hours.

Nature

The Dobrnič area contains several karst caves, swallow holes, resurgence springs, karst depressions and shafts. A notable observation is associated with the spring of the sinking stream Žibrščica: an olm, a Dinaric endemic species, was found there in the Dobrnič area.

In the immediate surroundings of Dobrnič, the settlement of Cvinger nad Koriti was established on a nearby hill in the 8th century BC. Also in the surrounding area, several burial grounds associated with Cvinger nad Koriti indicate continuous settlement into antiquity. The landscape around Dobrnič therefore bears not only visible karst formations but also traces of a settlement history reaching far back into the past.

Trails

The Mali Trebanjski Krog runs entirely on asphalt, mostly along local and village roads. It leads through Knežja vas and Železno to Dobrnič. Together with the two branches of the Pot Mare Rupene and the Baraga Hiking Trail, it forms a network of routes in which Dobrnič appears as a named destination or waypoint.
