Poljane nad Škofjo Loko: Holiday Apartment Between Culture and Hiking Trails

In Poljane nad Škofjo Loko, sacred history, art and marked trails converge. Around the town, traces range from archaeological finds and a parish church mentioned in medieval records to a functioning water mill and hiking trails leading into the landscape below Blegoš.

Culture

The parish church of St. Martin in Poljane was first mentioned in 1291. Archaeological excavations at the site of St. Martin’s Church uncovered structural remains from the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque construction phases. During these excavations, a foundation stone engraved with the year 1710 was also discovered. After it was destroyed due to damage sustained during the interwar period, the former Church of St. Martin was demolished. In 1967, a new church of the same name was built at another location according to plans by the architect Anton Bitenc. St. Martin in Poljane is open one hour before Mass.

The Church of St. Primus and Felician on Gabrška Gora is located in the surroundings of Poljane. It has a rectangular Romanesque presbytery dating from the 13th century. On a hill northwest of Poljane there is also a protected archaeological site with remains of a prehistoric settlement and ancient graves.

Another cultural highlight is Šubičeva hiša, the birthplace of the Slovenian painters Janez and Jurij Šubic. The house contains a museum collection dedicated to the art of the Šubic family of painters. As a cultural centre, Šubičeva hiša offers creative workshops, activities in the art studio and exhibitions in the gallery.

The Fartunov Mill also preserves historic technology. It is believed to date from the beginning of the 17th century; today, it is one of the few water mills still in operation. The mill has two pairs of millstones and stampers. During a visit, you can also see the video “From Grain to Bread” and a fresco by Maja Šubic depicting St. Martin.

Hiking

The Cvetje v jeseni themed trail begins in Poljane and leads to Blegoš. The route runs across colourful meadows and through rustling forests, past scattered farmhouses and hamlets below Blegoš. Signposts and white-and-yellow markings on a blue background identify the themed trail. Every year on the last Sunday in August, a guided hike takes place there at 8 a.m., starting in Poljane in front of Gostilna na Vidmu.

For additional routes, the municipal hiking route runs in one section from Poljane nad Škofjo Loko via Gabrška Gora, Vrhovčevo, Na poklonu, Četena Ravan, Stari vrh, Mladi vrh and Koprivnik to Črni Kal. The Gabrška Gora–Lubnik hiking trail is signposted from Poljane; trail markings guide hikers along an uphill path. A marked route from Poljane also leads to the Church of St.

Cycling

For longer rides, there is the cycling circuit of the Municipality of Gorenja Vas–Poljane. It is 115 kilometres long, includes 3,400 metres of elevation gain and descent, and is divided into three stages.
