Holiday apartment in Vas: Mills, archaeology and cycling

Vas can be explored through several named sites and structures. Craft buildings and archaeological finds give the place different historical points of reference.

Culture

Snežičeva žaga and the Mlin form a characteristic rural economic complex, of which little has been preserved; as an ensemble, they are an important ethnological monument. Both stand on the Erhatov potok in an authentic setting in Vas. Snežičeva žaga has an old classic mechanism that was adapted to electric power.

The Tišlerjev mlin stands on the Mivčev potok and has a water wheel. An old, functional milling mechanism with millstones has been preserved inside it. The Tišlerjev mlin is considered one of the last old farm mills still preserved today. The surroundings of the restored Tišlerjev mlin have been prepared for tourism.

Markačev skedenj, dating from the 19th century, stands at Vas 24. The building displays agricultural equipment, including a threshing machine from 1915, a fruit press fully reconstructed in 2010, and a grain mill designed and built by Anton Markač (1901–1970). Following extensive reconstruction in 2009, Markačev skedenj was fully converted into a space for exhibitions and entertainment.

Nature

Beneath the Herkove pečine lies a cave classified as a natural and archaeological monument of exceptional importance because such sites are rare. It is regarded as a prehistoric hunting station. Its sediments have been dated to the Middle Pleistocene. An archaeological test trench excavated in 1939 revealed simple stone tools and struck pebbles made of coarse-grained quartz, which were assigned to the Palaeolithic. The dating refers to the sediments; the tools were assigned to the Palaeolithic. However, later surveys did not confirm the archaeological finds. The cave mainly yielded fossils of Pleistocene animals, particularly cave bears, marmots, wolves and foxes.
