Muta connects the terraces and flat areas of the Drava Valley with a hilly hinterland along the national border. The town is situated in an Alpine foothill landscape with rich flora and a relatively large number of surface waters. Expansive landscapes, waterways and historic buildings meet paths through the surrounding area here.
Culture
At the confluence of the Bistrica and the Drava stands the Rotunda of St. John the Baptist. Its nave is round, covered with a shingle roof and fitted with a small roof turret. The nave is illuminated by an original semicircular Romanesque window, while the chancel has three Gothic windows.
The Museum of Blacksmithing, Foundry Work and Firefighting is located in the former Kienhofen estate. It preserves blacksmithing, foundry and firefighting products from the 18th century and presents the more than 400-year tradition of blacksmithing, foundry work and firefighting in Muta. The museum site thus combines the historic location of the former estate with preserved products and a long local tradition.
The parish church of St. Margaret in Zgornja Muta also reaches far back into history: it was first mentioned in 1349 as a chapel and between 1460 and 1465 as a parish church. The church features Baroque furnishings from the 17th century; a gravestone from 1595 is also set into its exterior façade.
Nature
Mitnica is a sports and tourism park on the banks of the Bistrica and the Drava in Spodnja Muta. The park provides tourist information and brochures from providers in the wider surrounding area. The Mitnica grounds include an open-air natural amphitheatre; a nearby sports field for events is also located there.
Near the Ecological Chapel, a bridge crosses the Bistrica to the Sedelnik Waterfall. In the nearby area around the Ecological Chapel, a marked mountain trail also leads to Sv. Jernej, with a walking time of approximately one and a half hours. In the same nearby area, the Sedelnik Waterfall is described as the highest waterfall in the Kozjak area.
