Culture and history

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Majšperk was first mentioned in 1261. The current building is said to date from 1639; it was renovated in 1929. The place name also leads back into the past: Majšperk takes its name from the medieval Mansberg Castle.

In the municipality, Galerie Breg offers free exhibition visits every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visits are also possible during the opening hours of the municipal administration by prior arrangement. Organized groups can also visit the gallery outside regular hours by prior agreement. Also in the municipality, the Museum of Wool and Tapestries preserves memories of the former textile industry in the Podravje region. It is open to visitors by prior registration.

Hamre Manor is a single-storey, rectangular building with a Baroque façade. A chapel tower with stucco decoration and a Baroque room fountain adjoins the manor house. In Naraplje, the village mill was restored by the villagers under the auspices of the Naraplje Tourist Association; today it is running again beside the rushing water.

In the surroundings of Majšperk, the Basilica of Mary, Protector, is located on Ptujska Gora. It is the central pilgrimage and museum site of the Municipality of Majšperk. The Starotrška House on Ptujska Gora houses an ethnological museum of rural life with old objects and furniture, a black kitchen, an open hearth and a bread oven. Local culture also includes the music event “V Majšperku pojemo in igramo po domače”, which took place in Majšperk on 23 October 2022 and 29 October 2023.

Nature and trails

At Lake Sestrško jezero, there is a walking trail that leads on the eastern side to the kozolec in Sestrže and to the gallery of the painter Branko Gajšta. An educational trail for birdwatching also runs there. The Municipality of Majšperk provides two Cube e-bikes for hire. Key handover and the necessary formalities are handled at the municipal office at Majšperk 39.

The shared geographical location, natural heritage, and similar history and cultural background of the municipalities of Makole, Majšperk and Poljčane formed the basis for developing cycling, educational and hiking trails in the Dravinja Valley.
