Ptuj: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The historic centre of Ptuj has preserved its medieval urban structure over the centuries. A walk through the historic centre passes Roman monuments and medieval façades; Ptuj Castle Hill offers far-reaching views.

Culture

Ptuj Castle houses collections of the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum, including weapons, musical instruments, traditional carnival masks, reverse glass paintings and castle galleries. The castle also displays Tibia, a Roman double flute from the 2nd or 3rd century.

The Kurent House uses interactive technologies to present the Kurent/Korant ritual and the region’s cultural heritage, and can be visited year-round. The Povoden Museum on Slovenski trg is Slovenia’s oldest open-air lapidarium. A Roman brick kiln can be seen in the former crafts district of Poetovio.

At the sites of the 1st and 3rd Mithraeums, visitors can see foundations, altars, reliefs and cult images from Roman sanctuaries dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The Dominican Monastery was founded in 1230 by Matilda, the widow of Frederick III of Ptuj. Restored parts of the Dominican Monastery serve as venues for cultural events and are open to visitors. The Minorite Monastery was built in the 13th century, has been restored and contains a monastic library with more than 5,000 books.

With its 120-year history, Ptuj City Cinema is considered Slovenia’s oldest active cinema venue and has preserved its romantic retro appearance. The Poetovio Archaeological Park offers museum objects, guided tours, interactive educational content, events and exhibitions.

Cityscape

Ptuj’s town tower offers an interactive exhibition and a mechanical clock with a 21-metre pendulum. The “Drava – Ptuj” Interpretation Centre presents the relationship between the Drava, nature, people and the history of Ptuj.

Paths and Landscape

The walking paths at the Panorama archaeological site follow the route of former Roman roads. The Drava Cycle Route can be cycled as a circular route from Ptuj to Maribor and back; the lower variant leads via Hajdina and Starše and is flatter and less busy.

Wine and Orientation

Ptujska Klet traces the symbolic beginning of viticulture in Ptuj back to the year 1239, when the Minorites established a wine cellar beneath their monastery.

Registration at least three days in advance is required for a guided tour of the 3rd Mithraeum. Ptuj railway station is only a few hundred metres from the city centre.
