Holiday apartment in Straža: Krka, vineyards and culture

Straža lies on the Krka, which flows through the town and is used there primarily for leisure and sports. Between the river, vineyards, hiking trails and notable cultural sites, a diverse picture of this Slovenian destination emerges.

Nature

Three interconnected circular hiking trails run across Straški hrib: Gozdarska, Rimska and Vinogradniška. All three start and end at Straža railway station, where a large car park is available. From there, a marked footpath with white-and-green markings also leads to Velika Prepadna Cave. Two organised hikes with a guided visit take place at this cave every year; the visit is only possible when accompanied by caving experts.

Vzletišče Peter serves paragliders as a launch site and is also a popular starting point for hikers. The site is located above Dolenje Polje at an altitude of 464 metres. Facing southeast, the view extends across the Topliška Valley, to Ljuben and the Gorjanci.

In the surroundings of Straža lies Glinokopi Zalog, an approximately 700-metre-long habitat educational trail in the Temenica Natura 2000 area. The circular trail starts and ends at Breza Sports Park.

Culture

The Church of Sv. Tomaža has an older, still medieval nave. In the 17th century, a three-sided closed chancel with a ribbed vault was added to the church. The church is designated a cultural monument of local importance and is also a named station on the Dularjeva Trail.

The Dularjeva Trail passes through places described in the books of the writer, poet and museologist Jože Dular. Its route includes a viewpoint between vineyards overlooking the Straška Valley and the Krka. Another station is Ravbarjeva zidanica, which commemorates Jožica Venturini from the period of the Second World War.

The Dularjev Mill and sawmill in Vavta vas are also designated cultural sites: both were declared cultural monuments of local importance in 2015. The first mention of the mill in Vavta vas dates from 1502 or 1504. There is also a 15th-century plague marker near Pograjc.

Wine and regional tradition

There are numerous vineyards and vineyard cottages on Straški hrib above Straža, thanks to its favourable location and warm climate. Straška gora, Nova gora, Stara gora and Ljuben are local wine-growing areas within the Posavje-Dolenjska wine-growing region, where Cviček originates.

At one of the available vineyard cottages in Straža, visitors can taste wine by prior arrangement; a homemade snack may also be offered.

Events

Straška jesen is a traditional event held in the first week of September. Another event on the water is Dan na Krki: the programme includes a descent of the Krka by raft and other watercraft. Dan na Krki has taken place since 2010 during the summer days of July.
