Škocjan in the Radulja Valley – Holiday Apartment, Culture and Trails

Škocjan lies in the Radulja Valley and has developed over seven centuries. Historical sites, trails and events are part of the town. The town is home to the church in the centre, the stone bridge over the Radulja and the trails that commemorate Ignacij Knoblehar.

Culture and History

Škocjan was first mentioned in 1306. The Parish of Škocjan is one of the oldest parishes in Slovenia. In the centre of Škocjan, the 17th-century church “Cerkev sv. Kancijana in tovarišev mučencev” occupies a prominent position on a hill. The painting “Sv. Kancijana v slavi”, created by Matej Sternen, is located in the church’s presbytery. Beneath the gallery, south of Jeršetič’s tomb, there is a memorial plaque dedicated to the missionary and explorer of the White Nile, Dr Ignacij Knoblehar.

Landscape and Trails

Because of its dimensions, form and construction, the stone two-arch bridge over the Radulja is one of the few remaining bridges of its kind in Dolenjska. A road crossing the bridge connects the Krka Valley with the Sava Valley. The Knobleharjeva pot begins in Škocjan in front of the municipal building and connects places in the area around Škocjan associated with Ignacij Knoblehar. Every year in February, hikers set out from Metelkov dom on a hike along the Metelkova pot. Jelka is a tour guide who leads larger and smaller groups to the sights of Škocjan.

Events

The Škocjan na Dolenjskem Tourist Association lists the accordion competition “Tekmovanje harmonikarjev” among its annual events. The 25th accordion competition “Škocjanska harmonika” was successfully concluded in 2026. The Kmečke igre take place every year around the PGD Škocjan fire station during the KNOBLEHARJEVO municipal holiday.
