Holiday Apartment in Dolenje Kronovo: Cultural Heritage and the Krka’s Natural Environment
Dolenje Kronovo combines a layered local history with natural connections to the Krka. “Dolenje Kronovo – Gomila Dol” is an archaeological heritage site. Dolenje Kronovo was already mentioned as a market town in the 14th century. The investigated part of the Dolenje Kronovo archaeological site was already inhabited in the Bronze Age.
Culture and History
Another archaeological site lies between Dolenje Kronovo and Družinska vas on the left bank of the Krka: this is the Požarnice site. Remains from the Early Iron Age and the Roman period have been discovered there. The finds include a road from the Early Iron Age, approximately 3 metres wide and paved with stones. During the Roman period, there was also a small settlement at this location consisting of several wooden and stone buildings. A bell belonging to the furnishings bears the year 1531.
Nature
The landscape around Dolenje Kronovo is also characterised by designated natural areas. Part of the locally significant Toplica natural heritage area lies within the territory of Dolenje Kronovo. The territory of Dolenje Kronovo lies within the Natura 2000 SAC “Krka s pritoki” and, at the same time, within the ecologically important area “Krka – reka”. The valuable natural area along the Krka is also located in the immediate vicinity.
Near Dolenje Kronovo lies the island of Otok Tržič. It is the largest of the named tufa deposits in the Krka. When water levels are low in summer, visitors can wade through the Krka to the island of Otok Tržič.
Geographical Location
Dolenje Kronovo lies in the immediate vicinity of the tourist towns of Otočec and Šmarješke Toplice. For Dolenje Kronovo, access to the Krka and undeveloped riverbanks are designated as settlement features to be preserved. At the same time, Dolenje Kronovo is intended to develop as a local centre of limited importance at an important transport hub with motorway access as well as regional and local roads.
Paths and Routes
The connection between Otočec and Dolenje Kronovo is 1,181 metres long; the connection between Gorenje Kronovo and Dolenje Kronovo measures 536 metres. A longer route is the 12.9-kilometre family cycling route “Družinska pot” from Otočec to Šmarješke Toplice. It continues along the left bank of the Krka to Dolenje Kronovo.
