Holiday apartment in Žužemberk: Castle, Krka and culture

Žužemberk combines a striking castle complex with the river landscape of the Krka. The remains of Žužemberk Castle form a typical medieval fortress on a steep rock above the river. Its history dates back to the 13th century; in the 16th century, the castle was fortified with seven defensive towers. Visits and exploration are possible independently or accompanied by a guide.

Culture

One of the notable historical sites is a small church with a Baroque altar and important 14th-century frescoes. Its exterior features a fresco depicting a storm at sea and an embedded Roman gravestone. The surviving frescoes are considered significant monuments of medieval painting in Dolenjska. The church is designated as a cultural monument with art-historical, architectural and historical characteristics.

Traces of local history can also be found in other places. Breg in Žužemberk is considered the birthplace of Zalla Zarana, the first Slovenian film actress in Hollywood. A restored fire pump belonging to the Požarna bramba Žužemberške from 1888 can be seen on the balcony of the fire station. Tomaž's Love Bridge is a wooden bridge built on the site of an earlier bridge that connected the two riverbanks near two mills. Žužemberk is also home to a cast-iron pumping station built by the former Auersperg ironworks in nearby Dvor.

In nearby Dvor, the restored Auersperg ironworks complex includes the Lončarija exhibition space and the Trajberk visitor centre with multimedia facilities. Guided tours of the complex are available by prior arrangement. The Ironworks Museum and Gallery in Dvor display original castings and demonstrate smelting, mould-making and casting. In addition, the museum dedicated to notable figures from Suha krajina presents manuscripts, documents, objects, books and photographs. This museum can be visited by prior arrangement with the school.

In Žužemberk, you can also follow the route of a Roman road. The historical trail continues in the form of an event: “Cycling along the Roman Road” takes place in June and leads through Ivančna Gorica, Valična vas, Žužemberk and Dvor.

Nature

The Krka is considered Slovenia's only river with tufa deposits. The Krka has a total of 90 tufa barriers, with particularly beautiful ones near Žužemberk. A suggested route from the centre of Žužemberk to Dvor follows this river landscape. Along the route, you can swim, paddle, go boating or fish in the Krka.

Trails

The “Along the Iron Routes to Dvor” trail is considered a pleasant hike suitable for all generations. Before starting the trail, you can visit the Žužemberk Pavilion in the square in front of Žužemberk Castle. Free parking spaces are available in front of the castle in the centre of town; nearby sights can be reached on foot or by bicycle.

There is also an audio supplement for visiting the castle: at the nearby Gostilna pri gradu, you can obtain a leaflet providing access to audio guides for 20 stations at Žužemberk Castle. During the tour, independent exploration, guided tours and the audio stations are therefore available as different forms of visiting the castle.

Events

The castle is also the venue for the traditional Medieval Day. The programme includes knight fights, demonstrations of traditional crafts, medieval music and dancing. Suhokranjski dnevi, formerly Trški dnevi, take place on the municipal holiday of the Municipality of Žužemberk, 15 July, and combine cultural, leisure, ethnological and tourism-related programme items. The Suhokranjski dnevi programme in Žužemberk includes a traditional cooking competition for Ješprenj.
