Holiday apartment in Starše – Drava landscape and Natura 2000

Starše is located on the right bank of the Drava. Part of the area lies on Drava terraces, while another part is situated on the low-lying plain along the river. Between the river landscape, cycling routes, regional traditions and historical traces, a diverse picture of the town emerges.

Nature

Part of the Drava Landscape Park belongs to the area of Starše and is included in the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The old Drava river channel with its side channels, oxbow lakes, riparian forests and meadows in the Starše area provides a habitat for 250 bird species; 38 of them are considered species of European importance. The Drava Landscape Park in the Starše area includes oxbow lakes, river terraces, numerous gravel banks, riparian forests and marshy meadows. There are also floodplains that become inundated in rainy weather.

Cycling and the River

The D5 Drava cycling connection runs through the municipality of Starše. The section within the municipality mainly follows existing local roads and partly runs along field and forest paths. The Drava cycling route has been completed within the municipality of Starše. The Tejek fishermen’s hut is located on the Drava and is managed by the Starše department of the Ptuj Fishing Association; it can be rented for picnics and celebrations.

Culture and History

Starše is home to the Church of St. John the Baptist of the parish of Št. Janž na Dravskem Polju. It was consecrated in 1833 and has a bell tower dating from 1861. Starše was formerly known as Stara vas; the entire parish was called Šentjanž. This name derives from a manor farm named after Saint John, dating from the period of the Ravno polje estate. The municipality hosts three traditional events, held in May and September.

Regional Specialties

At Kmetija Selinšek in Starše, farm tours and tastings of its own products are offered by prior arrangement. The farm shop sells homemade yogurts, curd cheese, curd cheese spreads and several types of cheese. In the municipality of Starše, the traditional training of grapevines along houses is also preserved; this is known as brajde, and the protected wine brand “La brajde” has also been created.

Experiences

In 2023, the Starše Sports Association organized the traditional Mirko Dobnik Memorial Tournament for the 37th consecutive time. On May 2, 2023, the Zlatoličje Volunteer Fire Brigade organized a traditional cycling tour for members and residents through the municipality of Starše. One tourism package includes a tour of Zlatoličje with historic tractors, a trip on the Drava in restored traditional boats, an introduction to life on the river, a practical demonstration of gold panning and a tasting of local specialties. The Zlata Drava project preserves the cultural and historical heritage of gold panning in Zlatoličje; this includes historical and field research as well as three workshops for specific target groups. Sports fields and rooms can be rented at the Športni park Starše.
