Holiday apartment in Bresternica: Lake, Trails and Culture

Bresternica brings together landscape, activity and art in several clearly distinguishable facets. Water, trails, sports facilities and cultural works give the place a multifaceted, clearly definable character.

Nature

Lake Mariborsko jezero is a landscape park of local importance covering an area of 200 hectares. Its lower section is considered a nationally important wintering area for waterbirds. Over the course of the year, systematic surveys and occasional observations at Lake Mariborsko jezero recorded 60 waterbird species. The park's size, the national status of its lower section and the birdlife recorded throughout the year are therefore clearly connected spatially.

Trails

Žavcarjev Vrh is a 915 m-high summit in the eastern Kozjak above the northern side of the Drava Valley. The hills are forested, while the southern slopes and ridges are characterised by isolated farms. The Pot čez Kozjak trail passes through vineyards and orchards, forests and stands of centuries-old chestnut trees, as well as across fields and meadows. The landscape therefore alternates between wooded sections, open areas and slopes and ridges shaped by farms.

The hiking trail to Žavcarjev Vrh is an easy 4.4 km route with an elevation gain of 513 m and a stated duration of 1.5 hours. It starts in Spodnji Rušnik at a car park by the Bresterniški potok stream. The route can thus be clearly assessed in terms of its starting point, difficulty, length, elevation gain and stated duration.

Water and Activity

The Bresternica Rowing Centre comprises a rowing facility, a boathouse and an outdoor sports field. The Bresternica boathouse is located on Lake Bresternica; there, the Drava widens and flows into the reservoir of the Mariborski otok hydroelectric power plant. The outdoor sports field at the Bresternica Rowing Centre was open to club members and other users. This location therefore combines specific sports facilities with a body of water where the Drava flows into the reservoir of the hydroelectric power plant.

Culture

Culture is expressed in Bresternica and in the wider urban context through specific works. Bresternica is home to a concrete sculpture by Maciej Szankowski (PL) from 1977. Okno is a work by Maribor's Forma Viva, installed outside the city. The two works thus represent different relationships to place: a dated concrete sculpture in Bresternica and a work by Maribor's Forma Viva outside the city.
