Vojsko is a sparsely populated karst plateau in the Idrija Hills. The plateau features untouched high-altitude meadows rich in flowers and offering a wide variety of medicinal plants. It stretches across the steep slopes of the Kanomljica and Idrijca rivers; the views extend from Triglav to Snežnik.

Landscape and Nature

One of the distinctive landscape areas is Smrekova draga, which is part of the Golaki forest reserve and has an inverted distribution of vegetation. The Gačnik stream also shapes the surroundings: it plunges over the Gačniško stopnišče, a series of fourteen waterfalls. The Gačnik Gorge also features rapids, ravines and pools.

A prominent viewpoint is Hudournik. From there, the view extends across the Idrija Fault Zone to Most na Soči. The Julian and Kamnik Alps, including Triglav, are also visible. Thus, different landscape areas and distinctive mountain ranges can be seen from a single viewpoint, without confusing their respective geographical relationships.

Culture and History

The Slovenija Partisan Printing House has been fully preserved and has been open to visitors as a cultural and historical monument since 1947. With the help of the attendant, visitors can print a commemorative sheet there. From Idrija, the printing house is most easily reached via a 14 km road to Vojsko; from there, two paths lead to it.

The Church of Saint Joseph stands in Vojsko. It has two side altars, a main altar dedicated to Saint Joseph, ceiling frescoes rediscovered in 1983 and a relief-style Stations of the Cross. The church is believed to have been completed in 1669. The culture of remembrance also includes the memorial at the cemetery in Vojščica, commemorating 305 fighters who fell shortly before liberation.

Route No. 4 starts at the Church of Saint Joseph in Vojsko. It is an easy 26.5 km cycling route. In winter, Vojsko has cross-country ski trails through the plateau’s rugged landscape. In addition to landscape and cultural sites, the local area therefore also offers clearly defined opportunities for cycling and cross-country skiing.
