Črni Vrh combines nature, history and local traditions with trails that reveal different facets of the landscape. Between karst formations, forests, historical memories and the night sky, a multifaceted picture of the place emerges, made up of specific routes, structures and special viewpoints.
Culture
A historical landmark is the Church of Saint Judok in Črni Vrh, which dates from 1570. The World War I Museum Črni Vrh focuses on a different aspect. It displays exhibits from the First World War, most of which were found in the Črnovrško area. Interesting exhibits include parts of a military railway known as a field railway.
Regional traditions and the life of the local population also have their place. On the Črnovrška Plateau, the tradition of growing and processing flax is being revived. The Matuckarjeva Trail provides insights into typical karst landscapes and natural features, the architecture characteristic of Zadlog, and the former and present-day ways of life of Zadlog's residents. Alongside historical traces, this places crafts and everyday life at the centre of attention.
Trails
The Panoramic Summits above Črni Vrh route is a marked hiking trail and begins at Šajsna Ravan. A shorter option is the Kraški gozd educational trail: it is an easy 2.4 km walk with an estimated walking time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The two trails therefore differ significantly in their design and stated duration.
The Kraški gozd educational trail provides information about karst phenomena, typical fossil karst rocks, forest vegetation and the function of the forest ecosystem. The route therefore focuses not only on the path through the forest, but also on the geological and ecological relationships of the karst.
Nature
In fine weather, the Panoramic Summits above Črni Vrh route offers wide vistas from the Adriatic to Triglav. The landscape can also be crossed by bicycle on the Pot po visokem krasu route. It leads through the High Karst area and shows karst fields with ponors and sinkholes, as well as uvalas and dolines.
Another viewpoint is located on Javornik: since 1972, a lookout tower has stood on the summit, offering wide vistas. Together with the karst fields, geological formations and forest-related themes of the educational trail, this creates a landscape in which the different forms of the High Karst become visible.
Night
At the observatory on Javornik, the night sky can be observed on clear nights. The site thus complements the trails and viewpoints with a nocturnal perspective on the surrounding area.
