Holiday Apartment in Lome: Karst Forest, Caves and Culture

The Karst Forest Educational Trail begins in Lome at the Zgornje Lome/Spodnje Lome intersection. From this starting point, a trail leads through an area where geological formations and forest come together.

Nature

The Karst Forest Educational Trail is an easy circular route. Numerous dolines are visible along the way. There is also a limestone pavement near Spodnje Lome. Fossilized remains of rudist shells can be seen in the Lower Cretaceous limestone. The trail passes through an autochthonous fir and beech forest, bringing together several characteristic elements of the karst landscape.

On the forest section, Hrvat Cave is reached after approximately 300 metres. This approximate distance remains part of the route description. From Ljubljana, take the exit for Lome to reach the trail; the route then follows a minor road for approximately 500 metres to the Spodnje Lome/Zgornje Lome intersection.

The Karst Forest Educational Trail can be cycled, extended to the High Karst Trail and connected with the Matuckar Trail in Zadlog. In the vicinity of Lome, the lookout tower on Javornik offers views above the treetops of the Dolomites, the Carnic and Julian Alps, the Karawanks, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and Snežnik.

Culture

The local cultural history includes Domačija Tominc in Lome, which is part of the built cultural heritage. Matej Cigale is also closely associated with the village: he was born in Lome, edited an extensive German–Slovenian dictionary in 1860 and compiled a German–Slovenian terminological dictionary in 1880.

A memorial plaque to Matej Cigale was placed in 1894 on his parents’ house in the nearby Dolnji Lomeh. At Lome 8 in Pri Kašc, an apiary is attributed to Frančiška Tominc, a beekeeper.

Another historical name is Matej Tominc. He was born on 7 September 1790 in Lomeh near Črni Vrh nad Idrijo and was a pioneer of tourism in the Škocjan Caves.

The Javornik ski resort is currently closed. Its ski slopes are considered suitable for beginners and highly advanced skiers.

The 26th night hike to Javornik was scheduled for 31 January 2026. It was to run from Črni Vrh via Gromov grič in Gornje Lome to the Pirnatova Hut on Javornik.
