Holiday apartment in Mengeš: culture, hiking trails and Rašica

The area around Mengeš lies at the foot of Gobavica. There are numerous hiking trails around the town, while regional cycling routes run through the center. In addition, there is a cultural history that can be seen specifically at St. Michael’s Church and the Mengeš Town Museum. Culture

St. Michael’s Church, known in German as the Church of Saint Michael, has a baptismal font designed by Jože Plečnik and is considered worth seeing. Its present-day chancel was built in the mid-15th century in the Gothic style. The frescoes in the presbytery date from around 1460 and are attributed to the workshop of Janez Ljubljanski. The individual elements combine a Gothic architectural period with pictorial decoration from the same era and a later design by Jože Plečnik.

On Rašica, the viewing platform on the tower offers views in good weather of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, the Karawanks, the Julian Alps and the lower hills around Ljubljana. The landscape panorama thus extends from the high mountain ranges to the lower elevations in the surroundings of Ljubljana.

The Mengeš Hut can be reached from Ljubljana by bus to the Mengeš Pavovec stop. From there, follow the signs to the hut either along the road or via the fitness trail. There is also a signposted paved parking area below the hill. From there, the approach to the Mengeš Hut leads either via a trim trail or a steeper forest path.

Cycling routes

The regional cycling route Kamnik–Mengeš–Trzin–Ljubljana runs through the center of Mengeš and through the settlement of Loka pri Mengšu. In addition, the Domžalski slamnik cycling route passes through Mengeš. It is 49.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 280 m and is classified as difficult.

Local features

The Mengeš Hut serves hot stew dishes and homemade cold-cut platters. At weekends, it offers lunch with traditional Slovenian dishes. At the Mengeš Hut, children can feed and observe goats, Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, chickens and friendly horses.
