Holiday apartment in Zgornja Pohanca: Mill, Culture and Landscape
Exploration in Zgornja Pohanca begins at the Močnik stream: Rožmanov Mill stands in the southern part of the village. The mill is a single-storey wooden building with a rectangular floor plan, resting on stone and concrete foundations. Next to the building, a wooden millrace with a sluice gate and two wooden water wheels have been preserved. Thus, in one place, you encounter both the building itself and several elements of former milling technology.
Culture
Older traces are also part of the picture of Zgornja Pohanca. A Roman tombstone dating from the late 1st or early 2nd century AD comes from the village. Another specific reminder is the Rudi-Rožanc Monument: it is located below Zgornja Pohanca on the left bank of the Močnik stream and was erected in 1961. The history of the village is thus reflected both in an archaeological find and in a 20th-century monument.
In the surroundings of Zgornja Pohanca lies Pišečki grad, a castle. In the wider regional area are Novi Dvori, a castle, and Pleterje, a monastery. The different designations and spatial references remain clear: Pišečki grad belongs to the surroundings, while Novi Dvori and Pleterje belong to the wider regional area.
Geographical setting
A bridge over the Močnik stream connects Zgornja Pohanca in the Municipality of Brežice with Zdole in the Municipality of Krško. The stream is therefore connected not only with Rožmanov Mill and the Rudi-Rožanc Monument, but also marks a connection between two municipalities. Several distinctive elevations are also located in the surroundings of Zgornja Pohanca: Spiček is a mountain, Kajsov Vrh a peak, Bohor a mountain and Veliki Javornik a peak.
These names represent different landscape forms in the immediate surroundings of the village, without needing to be grouped into a single geographical category. For the geographical setting, their respective designations remain decisive: Spiček and Bohor are mountains, while Kajsov Vrh and Veliki Javornik are peaks. In the wider regional area, Novi Dvori Castle and Pleterje Monastery complement the cultural perspective.
Experiences
The Sadjarska Cycle Route passes through Zgornja Pohanca. The village is therefore also integrated into a specific cycling route. Kmetija Omerzu offers a different focus. The farm has been subject to organic inspection since 2015 and offers a one-hour tour with a beverage tasting; at least ten people take part.
By prior arrangement, walks around the property are also possible at Kmetija Omerzu. Visitors can learn about the organic way of working and taste the products made there. The tour with a beverage tasting and the arranged walk with insights into the way of working and a product tasting are two differently described offerings of the farm.
