Čatež Ob Savi can be explored through specific trails, rivers and historical landmarks. The Čateževa energijska pot is a circular trail that leads from Terme Čatež along the Sava embankment through Čatež Ob Savi to the summit of Sveti Vid.

Along the way

Another prominent point along this trail is the Church of St. Vitus at the highest point of Šentviška gora. The route therefore includes both the course along the Sava and a named summit and a sacred building. The Čateževa energijska pot reaches the Church of St. Vitus precisely at this highest point of Šentviška gora.

Culture and history

The Church of St. George dates back to the 12th century in its origins. At that time, a small wooden chapel stood there, which was later converted into a stone building and dedicated to Saint George. The construction of the church was led by Pastor Anton Križnar; Bishop Alojzij Wolf consecrated it in 1833. The church also contains a baptismal font dating from 1610.

A stone milestone of Emperor Antoninus Pius is also one of the historical landmarks in Čatež Ob Savi. It dates from the period between 139 and 141 AD. The partially reconstructed inscription is said to have indicated a distance of approximately 30 miles to the Roman settlement of Andautonia, present-day Šćitarjevo. This cautious wording remains part of the historical tradition surrounding the site.

Admission to the “Digitalna grajska sobana gradov Posavja” at the TIC Čatež Ob Savi is free of charge. Another gateway to the castles and the history of Posavje is presented there, without requiring an admission fee.

Water and landscape

The confluence of the Sava and Krka can be seen from the bridge connecting Čatež Ob Savi with Brežice. Špica, a viewpoint for photographers, lies at the confluence. Thus, two rivers, a connecting bridge and a viewpoint come together at one clearly named location.

Goli Crnik, a mountain, is located in the vicinity of Čatež Ob Savi. Goli Cirnik, a summit, is also located nearby. The two names refer to different landscape features. The vicinity of Čatež Ob Savi also includes Plešivica, a mountain, and Ravnina, a mountain.

Castles and monastery

Pišečki grad, a castle, is part of the surroundings of Čatež Ob Savi. In the wider regional area are Novi Dvori, a castle, Medvedgrad, a castle, and Pleterje, a monastery. The selection of named historic sites therefore ranges from a castle in the surrounding area to further castles and a monastery in the wider regional area.
