Veľký Meder: Holiday apartment between thermal baths, culture and nature
Veľký Meder combines year-round thermal attractions with historical sites and cultural activities. Between water experiences, local traditions and a marked hiking trail, the town reveals several distinct facets.
THERMAL CORVINUS is a year-round thermal aquapark with 13 pools, water slides and wellness facilities. Tarzánia Veľký Meder is also located at the Veľký Meder thermal baths. The facility features a 671-metre-long course with one children’s course and two courses for adults. Water, exercise and wellness are clearly identifiable areas of the town’s attractions.
Experiences
There is also a longer marked route through the surrounding landscape outside the thermal baths. Hiking trail 2451 runs from Veľký Meder to Číčovské mŕtve rameno (ŠPR) over a distance of 20.6 kilometres. The trail specifies not only a starting point and a destination, but also indicates the scale of a hike between the town and the protected area.
The Mestské kultúrne stredisko Veľký Meder offers cultural and educational activities for a broad section of the population in Veľký Meder. The institution complements the individual sights with a public cultural programme that explicitly includes both cultural and educational activities.
Culture
The religious buildings include the Roman Catholic Church of St Nicholas. It is a single-nave church in the eclectic style and has an organ with 14 stops. Another church in Veľký Meder is designed in the classical style and features Baroque elements. This church is also the oldest building in the town.
The Želiarsky dom – Vlastivedný dom was built as a residential house in 1836 and now serves as a local-history museum. It provides insights into rural domestic culture from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The building’s architectural history and museum use are closely connected: its original residential character points to the year 1836, while the exhibition focuses on the later period of rural domestic culture.
One local tradition is associated with the Starý dub Mateja Korvína. According to local legend, King Matthias Corvinus received the town judge in 1466 before granting Veľký Meder town privileges. The tree’s connection with this event explicitly belongs to the realm of local legend.
Traditions
Every year in June, traditional dishes are presented in the courtyard of the Ľudový dom. The date in June and the courtyard as the venue are just as much part of this custom as its focus on traditional dishes. In this way, local culture gains a culinary setting alongside its churches, museum and traditions.
Nature
The Číčovské mŕtve rameno national nature reserve was designated in 1964. It is part of the Číčovské luhy site of European importance. On three sides, the reserve is bordered by a more than 100-year-old Danube flood-protection embankment with riparian vegetation. Its designation as a national nature reserve, its establishment in 1964, its inclusion in Číčovské luhy, and the embankment with its riparian vegetation describe different aspects of the same landscape area.
