Culture and History

On the Great Rye Island, Žitný ostrov in Slovak, Sap is first documented in a deed from 1255. A later historical reference point is found in the 18th century: At that time, millers operated 29 water mills on the Danube.

The “Rybársky deň” festival is held annually in Sap. It serves to revive the local fishing culture and the fishing traditions passed down by the ancestors. The event is therefore closely connected with the traditional activity of fishing and complements the documented history of the village with a living local tradition.

Sap is home to a Neoclassical Reformed church dating from the late 18th century. It has a single-nave interior, a polygonal apse and a projecting tower. The church is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes.
