Holiday apartment in Štvrtok Na Ostrove: Church, Monuments and Culture

Štvrtok Na Ostrove combines an exceptional sacred history with small memorials scattered throughout the village. At its centre stands the Roman Catholic Church of Saint James the Greater. It is listed as a national cultural monument in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic and is located directly on the main road in an openly accessible area.

Culture

The history of the church goes back a long way: its foundations date from the middle of the 13th century. The nave is late Romanesque and features columns added at a later date. The church museum in Štvrtok na Ostrove also houses a 541-year-old death bell. The village’s historic heritage also includes the Fájdalmas Kereszt, a wayside cross that is among the historic monuments of Štvrtok na Ostrove.

The park by the church contains a Holy Trinity column. The village’s residents had it erected in 1900; in 2000, it was restored using funds from the local government. Its group of figures depicts the Holy Trinity. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand on the pedestal, while a group of figures depicting the Madonna and Saint Anne is located in a niche.

Further religious and memorial heritage can be found at various points throughout the village. In front of house no. 133 stands a sandstone wayside cross commissioned by Mihály Sill in 1799. The Fehér kereszt wayside cross stands in the fields towards Bratislava. Jakub Sill had it erected together with his wife Žofia Füle in 1913; a statue of Saint Anne stands on its pedestal. In the courtyard of house no. 48 stands a former wayside cross from 1913, with a stone Pietà group at its base.

A polychrome stone sculpture of Saint Florian in front of the cultural centre commemorates the year 1893. The statue stands on a tall column. The park behind the cultural centre contains a monument to those who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918, which was restored in 2000. A new monument to those who fell in the Second World War stands in the local cemetery.

The preserved villagescape also includes house no. 64, known as the “Ľudový dom”. The residential building dates from 1927, and its stylistic architectural design has been preserved.

Local Life

Since 2005, the Csemadok organisation of Štvrtok na Ostrove has held the “Dom hier” every month for children aged 6 to 15. As part of this programme, participants learn about forgotten folk crafts and traditional customs. In addition, the local Csemadok organisation holds a Month of the Mother Tongue every November, featuring literature, essay-writing and grammar competitions for young people.

Getting Around

A special traffic regulation applies to the road behind the cooperative in the direction of Hubice: it is closed to motor traffic, and entry is prohibited.
