Plavnica – Churches, Wooden Houses and EuroVelo 11

Culture

Plavnica begins with an Early Gothic testimony: the Kostol Obetovania Pána church was built around 1325 in the Early Gothic style. Of its Early Gothic structure, the enclosing walls and a Gothic window on the east side of the presbytery have been preserved. The church also contains a late Baroque sculpture and a polychrome wood carving of Christ on the Cross; both date from the second half of the 18th century.

The Evanjelický a.v. kostol was built in 1806 in the Classicist style and has a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross. It is considered a valuable example of the tolerance churches in the Šariš region. The Korunovania Panny Márie Chapel, built in 1857, is located on the road towards Stará Ľubovňa.

The sv. Jána Nepomúckeho Chapel was built at the end of the 18th century. The Baroque-Classicist building is surrounded by a small park and contains a colourful folk sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 19th century. The Povýšenia sv. Kríža Chapel was built in 1826 in the Classicist style and is located in the cemetery. Cyrila a Metoda was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Drevená zvonica dates from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and was declared a national cultural monument in 2016. Several picturesque wooden houses preserved in Plavnica also date from this period. The Jewish cemetery is located on a hill west of Plavnica and north of the road to Stará Ľubovňa; it was restored a few years ago. The sacred buildings, wooden architecture and Jewish cemetery each highlight distinct historical aspects of the village.

The mountains Bakuľa, Zimná hora, Sosnový vrch and Grapa are located in the immediate vicinity of Plavnica. Muszyna Castle - Ruiny Zamku is located in the vicinity of Plavnica. In the wider regional surroundings of Plavnica are Rytro Castle, Červený Kláštor Monastery and the Wooden Articular Church in Kežmarok.
