In Prešov (Preschau), technical history, urban architecture, collections and memorial sites stand side by side as different points of access. Solivar in Prešov is a national cultural monument and a complex of technical facilities dating from the 17th century, used to extract and boil salt from brine. The Múzeum Solivar offers visitors a guided tour covering the entire Solivar site. One of the preserved horse-powered hoists above the Leopold shaft in Solivar dates from the 19th century and is open to the public.
Culture
The Rákociho Palace presents Renaissance art, valuable clocks, weapons and means of payment, as well as the thousand-year history of the city of Prešov. Rákociho Palace also houses a collection of historical and more recent firefighting equipment that is unique in Slovakia in this comprehensive form; it is complemented by the history of firefighting. An exhibition in the same palace depicts the everyday and festive life of a Šariš village. The presentation covers textiles, agriculture, crafts, housing, work and leisure.
History
The Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is the oldest building in Prešov and the city’s only surviving Gothic religious building. A 360-degree panorama of Prešov can be seen from the tower of the Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. Reaching the top requires climbing 220 steps to a height of 70 metres. Among the preserved objects in the Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is a particularly valuable Gothic sculpture of the Crucified Christ from the first half of the 14th century.
The Evangelical College in Prešov is an important monument to the history of Protestant education. The hall known as the Dvorana in the Evangelical College houses the historical holdings of the college library, with more than 40,000 volumes. A monument erected at the Evangelical College in 1908 commemorates the victims of Caraffa’s bloody tribunal of 1687. The Orthodox Synagogue on Okružná Street in Prešov was built at the end of the 19th century in the Neo-Romanesque-Moorish style.
