Holiday apartment in Hermanovce: discover culture and hiking trails

In Hermanovce, several clearly identifiable traces of different eras and landscapes come together: According to the municipality, the Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is a defining landmark, historic monuments recall earlier generations, and marked trails lead into the surrounding mountain landscape.

Culture and history

The Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is part of the historic building heritage. It is a Baroque church built in 1650 and stands on the site of an older Gothic church that was already mentioned in 1438. It was restored between 1860 and 1864. According to the municipality, the church is considered the defining landmark of Hermanovce.

In front of the church entrance stands the Gloriet, an artistic funerary monument dating from 1811. The structure combines the function of a garden pavilion with that of a symbolic and actual family mausoleum. As a national cultural monument, the Gloriet is registered in the Central Register of the Monument Fund under number 292/2 and is considered an important sight in Hermanovce.

The memorial room dedicated to Štefan Hlaváč and František Majoch commemorates two priests from Hermanovce. Vestments, a grave cross, books and photographs from the life of Štefan Hlaváč are on display. The section dedicated to František Majoch documents, through photographs, the places where the priest died and was buried.

Hermanovce is also home to Kaštieľ Péchy, a historic aristocratic residence whose history dates back to the 18th century and which is considered a unique example of an aristocratic residence with a rich cultural heritage. Kaštieľ Péchy stands in the middle of a three-hectare English park. The property is privately owned and accessible by prior arrangement. In the village centre, publicly accessible remains of the farmyard belonging to the Péchy estate, known as Pánsky dvor, have been preserved.

Evidence of religious tradition can also be found outside the village centre. North of Hermanovce, a Stations of the Cross trail lies at the foot of Kucmanka Hill. A document concerning the division of an inheritance from 1320 refers to Hermanovce as “Villa Hermanni superior et inferior”, meaning Upper and Lower Hermanovce.

Landscape and hiking

Hermanovce lies on the slopes of the Šarišská vrchovina highlands. Their natural beauty attracts visitors from the wider surrounding area. A red-marked hiking trail begins at the cemetery, by the bus stop. It leads via Chrasť, at 773.5 metres above sea level, and Lazy, at 853.9 metres, to Mount Mindžová, at 920 metres, and continues to the municipality of Tichý potok.

The Hermanovce–Chotárna hiking trail opened in 2013. Chotárna Hut is visited by passers-by and by hikers who come to the region for a weekend and stay there overnight. The route towards Chotárna offers views of the Čergov Mountains and the valley near Renčišov.
