Holiday apartment in Spišské Podhradie: Churches, Synagogue and Trails

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Spišské Podhradie dates back to a Gothic church from the 13th century. It was later remodelled in its present Neoclassical form. This building alone shows how different eras are connected with one another in the town.

Culture and History

The Evangelical church is also part of Spišské Podhradie’s Neoclassical architectural history: it was built between 1799 and 1808 as a Neoclassical structure. The water mill offers a different focus. It is the town’s oldest agricultural and technical structure and is open to visitors during the summer season. The reference to the summer season limits the possible viewing period to this time of year.

The synagogue in Spišské Podhradie is a particularly multifaceted testimony. It was built around 1875 and restored after a fire in 1905–1906. Its architectural classification as a typical example of 19th-century provincial synagogue architecture is complemented by preserved interior features: the synagogue contains a women’s gallery supported by cast-iron columns and the original Torah ark. The synagogue is already being used for cultural purposes.

The Monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers is connected with a municipal hospital documented in Spišské Podhradie since 1327. In Spišská Kapitula, St Martin’s Cathedral acquired its monumental form between 1245 and 1275 as a three-nave building with two towers. The hospital and cathedral thus represent the documented urban history and monumental ecclesiastical architecture of Spišská Kapitula.

Trails and Pilgrimage

Spišské Podhradie lies along the route of the educational trail from Sivá Brada to Dreveník. The educational trail passes through Spišské Podhradie and ends in the Dreveník National Nature Reserve. For cycling, the blue cycle route from Spišské Podhradie to Pavľany is designated; it is 15.4 kilometres long. The stated distance makes the extent of this connection to Pavľany specific.

Another connection through the landscape is formed by the historic pilgrimage site of Spišský Jeruzalem. It extends from St Martin’s Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula to the Chapel of the Holy Cross on Sivá Brada. The starting point and destination of this connection are therefore clearly defined by name and location.
