Apartment in Korytné at the Foot of Branisko Mountain – Culture, History and MTB Route
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Matthew in Korytné is a Neoclassical church dating from 1816. Inside, it contains a late Baroque folk wood carving of the Crucified Christ from the late 18th century. The ruins of a manor house dating from the early 19th century stand next to the church. Today, only ruins remain at the site of the manor house. The Jencsa family crypt is also located next to St. Matthew’s Church. Korytné lies at the foot of Branisko Mountain and along an old transportation route.
Culture
The history of the village also includes a chapel dating from 1817. It is one year younger than the Church of St. Matthew, which dates from 1816. The Neoclassical church, the chapel and the late Baroque wood carving connect different forms of sacred architectural and artistic history in Korytné. The dates provide a clear chronological framework for the individual buildings and the artwork, while the Jencsa family crypt directly beside the church refers to the local history of the family.
The cultural traces are distributed across different forms of what has been passed down. Architecture, furnishings and family history each represent their own approach to the past. None of these levels replaces another: together, they create a village landscape in which sacred, private and architectural evidence can be read side by side. As a result, the past remains tied to specific places and objects and is not exhausted by a single building.
History
The manor house remained fully functional until 1956 and was inhabited by Gizela Jencsa until then. Another historical trace is the stone blacksmith’s workshop in Korytné. It dates from 1943 and was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1963. Among other things, the workshop was used to maintain horse-drawn carriages before their journey over Branisko Pass. A memorial also forms part of the village’s history: a monument to the soldiers who fought at Branisko on 5 February 1848 was later moved to the cemetery in Korytné.
The evidence of the village’s more recent history differs in its function and in the way it has been passed down. Residential use, craftwork and public commemoration form distinct historical levels. They represent different ways of engaging with the place and the past. Together, the information creates a picture that allows private, practical and commemorative aspects to stand side by side without reducing them to a single story.
